Simmons' on Chekhov, Peter Gay's.

Other ones I've read are Peter Franklin's "The Life of Mahler," Jens Malte Fischer's "Gustav Mahler," and "Mahler Remembered," which is a collection of anecdotes about Mahler. I enjoy all of these, although the first two might be hard to follow if you don't have at least a basic understanding of Mahler's background beforehand. Fischer is a good starting point and basically the best one volume bio of Mahler. The Carr book is good, too. It's just not as in depth as Fischer, but it deals with the time Mahler spent in NYC better than the Fischer book. For a one-volume bio, the Fischer is probably the one to get.
There are many books on Mahler. Why is this one my favorite? The first half of the book tells, in good detail and with biographical sources, the story of the life of the Late Romantic composer, Gustav Mahler. Lots of books do that, though few do it as well as Egon Gartenberg.
